To grow animal protein, protein must be fed. For more than 50 years, soybean meal has contributed to the profitability and associated growth of the animal protein production industries by serving as the primary source of supplemental protein/amino acids in poultry and swine feeds. While added primarily as a source of supplemental amino acids, soybean meal also provides other nutrients and nutritional energy. These constituents can add value to a feed formulation if fully utilized. No matter how good a product may be, there is always room for improvement, and in today’s competitive environment, constant improvement has become an expectation. Sometimes, improvement takes the form of dramatic change, but more often, it involves one or more “tweaks” that add incremental value. In the case of soybean meal, an example of dramatic change might be the creation of new, compositionally differentiated soybean lines, but such change takes time. Tweaks in processing soybeans into soybean meal represent options for near-term incremental improvement.
